Aknowledgements Results >> Ionic liquids (IL) are organic salts that remain liquid at room temperature and below. Besides having negligible vapour pressure, good electrical conduc vity and excellent temperature stability, they also exhibit outstanding tribological proper es. Bmim TFSI (shown right) was used because of improved conducvity, lubrica on and water-repelling proper es. Ionic Liquids Introduc on >> Electrical slip-rings are used in space satellites, radars, industrial robots, windmills and wherever else signal or power current is passed from a stator to a rotor. Because of wear and other tribological phenomena, the electrical resistance and noise increase with me, leading to reduced performance and failure. Pin-ondisk tests with ionic liquid and Buckminster gel lubrica on where performed and compared with commercial lubrica on.

Is the boundary layer of an ionic liquid equally lubricating at higher temperature?

Atomic force microscopy has been used to study the effect of temperature on normal forces and friction for the room temperature ionic liquid (IL) ethylammonium nitrate (EAN), confined between mica and a silica colloid probe at 25 °C, 50 °C, and 80 °C. Force curves revealed a strong fluid dynamic influence at room temperature, which was greatly reduced at elevated temperatures due to the reduced...

Weak solutions to lubrication systems describing the evolution of bilayer thin films

The existence of global nonnegative weak solutions is proved for coupled one-dimensional lubrication systems that describe the evolution of nanoscopic bilayer thin polymer films that take account of Navier-slip or no-slip conditions at both liquid-liquid and liquidsolid interfaces. In addition, in the presence of attractive van der Waals and repulsive Born intermolecular interactions existence ...

Evaluation Of Vapor Pressure And Ultra-High Vacuum Tribological Properties Of Ionic Liquids (2) Mixtures and Additives

Ionic liquids are salts, many of which are typically viscous fluids at room temperature. The fluids are characterized by negligible vapor pressures under ambient conditions. These properties have led us to study the effectiveness of ionic liquids containing both organic cations and anions for use as space lubricants. In the previous paper we have measured the vapor pressure and some tribologica...

Magnetic fluid lubrication of porous pivoted slider bearing with slip and squeeze velocity

In this paper the problem on “Magnetic fluid lubrication of porous-pivoted slider bearing with slip velocity by N Ahmad et.al.[7]” has been recapitulated using Jenkin’s model [4] with the additional effect of squeeze velocity of the above plate. It is found that while discussing the above problem, [7] has stated but ignored the term , where +, in their study (Refer equation(2.2)). This paper re...

Phase-separation in ion-containing mixtures in electric fields.

When a liquid mixture is subjected to external electric fields, ionic screening leads to field gradients. We point out that, if the mixture is initially in the homogeneous phase, this screening can bring about a robust phase-separation transition with two main features: (i) the phase separation is expected to occur in any electrode geometry, and (ii) the voltage required is typically of the ord...
